What If You Are the Ghost?

Every year, as October draws to a close, we dress our homes in cobwebs and carve faces into pumpkins. We tell stories of restless spirits who wander empty corridors, unable to move on. We laugh, we shiver, and then we turn the lights back on and feel safe again.
But this Halloween, I’d like to ask you something a little more unsettling than any ghost story.
What if the ghost is you?
The Haunting We Don’t Notice
Think about what a ghost actually is, in all the old stories. It is someone who is present in a place but not truly living there. It drifts through rooms without touching anything. It replays the same moments over and over. It is caught between what was and what can never be, unable to rest in the here and now.
Now think about an ordinary day. How much of it are you really there for?
So many of us drift through our own homes, our own relationships and our own lives in exactly this way. We are physically in the kitchen, but our minds are replaying a conversation from three years ago. We sit across the table from someone we love while scrolling through the lives of strangers on a glowing screen. We lie awake rehearsing arguments that will never happen and worrying about futures that may never arrive.
We are present but not present. We are haunting our own lives.
Why the Veil Is Thin
For thousands of years, long before plastic skeletons and trick-or-treating, this time of year was known as Samhain. It marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year. Our ancestors believed that at this moment the veil between the worlds grew thin, and the living and the dead could draw close to one another.
I have spent more than forty years working with the unseen, and I can tell you that the veil does thin at this time of year. But here is what most people miss. The veil does not only thin between the living and the dead. It thins between the person you have been and the person you are becoming.
That is why so many people feel unsettled as the nights draw in. Old memories surface. Old grief rises. Things you thought you had put away come knocking at the door. This is not a curse. It is an invitation. Whatever comes to you now is asking to be seen, honoured and finally laid to rest.
The Ghosts We Carry
In the old stories, a ghost cannot move on until something is resolved. A truth must be told, a wrong put right, a goodbye finally spoken.
We carry our own ghosts in very much the same way. The version of you who was told you weren’t good enough. The relationship you never properly grieved. The dream you quietly buried because it felt too big or too late. These parts of you don’t simply disappear. They linger in the corridors of your life, rattling the windows, waiting for you to notice them.
The kindest thing you can do this Halloween is not to run from them, but to sit down with them and listen.
Coming Back to Life
So how do you stop being a ghost in your own life? You come back into your body. You come back into this moment. You let your feet feel the floor, your hands feel the warmth of a cup, your lungs feel the cold, sharp air of an autumn evening. You put down the phone and look into the eyes of the person in front of you. You notice the smell of woodsmoke, the crunch of leaves, the flicker of a candle in the dark.
Life can only ever be lived now. Not in yesterday, not in tomorrow, but here.
A Simple Halloween Ritual
On the night of the 31st, when the house is quiet, light a single candle and sit with it for a few minutes. Ask yourself gently, “Where have I been haunting my own life?” Let whatever comes simply come, without judgement.
Then write down one thing from your past that you are ready to release, and one way you would like to be more fully alive in the year ahead. Thank the old part of you for everything it carried, and let it go as you blow out the candle.
Remember that in the ancient calendar, this was the start of the new year. Endings and beginnings were always meant to sit side by side.
A Final Thought
There is nothing wrong with enjoying the spooky side of Halloween. Dress up, carve your pumpkin, tell your stories by candlelight. But as you do, remember that the most powerful magic of this season isn’t in contacting the spirits of the past. It is in choosing to step out of the shadows and become fully alive again.
This year, don’t be the ghost. Be the one who finally comes home.
With love,Paula x
